How to Delegate—And Be Delighted by the Results
The more you delegate, the more you help others grow. The more you help others grow, the more you can take on challenges and opportunities for your own personal and career growth.
Learn these three steps for successful delegation: 1) The Five Ws and Cookie Monster, 2) MOCHA, and 3) Verify and Clarify.
1) The Five Ws and Cookie Monster: Articulate the below messages.
· Who: Outline roles
· What: Define the desired outcome; include details and straightforward instructions
· Where: Provide the locations of available resources
· When: Be clear about any strict deadlines or milestones
· How: In what ways their work will unfold
· Be Cookie Monster: Describe how your team can delight you. “Me love cookies!” Tell your colleagues, “I would be delighted if you could . . .”
2) MOCHA: Outline roles and responsibilities throughout the project using the MOCHA model.
The acronym “MOCHA” stands for Manager, Owner, Consultant Helper, and Approver. MOCHA is a project management framework, developed by The Management Center, that teams use to ensure clarity regarding roles and responsibilities.
3) Verify and Clarify: Delegating doesn’t mean dropping responsibility for the deliverable.
Ask clarifying questions:
· What are your next steps?
· How will you approach this project?
Request a verifying email.
· “So I know that we’re on the same page about . . . send me a quick email outlining your steps.”
· “So I know we’re aligned, shoot me a quick email describing your approach.”
Successful delegation is about developing trust in yourself and in others. If you follow these steps and utilize these tools, you’ll notice a dramatic improvement in your working life.
